Frequently Asked Questions

Know the facts before you sign any finance or rental agreements, it’s the LAW. We have compiled some important questions and facts that our customers have raised concerned about.

HVAC stands for heating, cooling and ventilation and is a term used for your furnace, air conditioner and all associated accessories.

A fan draws indoor air in through vents called return air duct located throughout your home. The air travels through the duct system to your furnace/ac, where it is then returned into your living space through supply vents and registers in your wall, ceilings and floors.

At The Comfort Xperts, we realize that purchasing a heating or air conditioning system is no small matter. However, if your existing system is old, in need of repair or simply inefficient, purchasing a new unit, one which can be as much as 60% more efficient than a system purchased just 10 years ago, can offer long-term benefits. You’ll realize major energy savings, improve your air quality as well as upgrade the safety components of your system.

There’s no one size fits-all-answer. The frequency of filter change is driven by how much your hvac system operates, which is also driven by your individual climate. Start by checking the filters at least once a month. Hold the used filter up to the light and compare it to a clean one. When the light is obscured by dust and dirt, the old filter should be changed. The average life of a standard 1” filter is approximately 3-4 months, depending on usage. Keep a record of your filter changes and observe the frequency. This will give you a good idea of how long your filters and lasting. It’s also a good idea to have a professional examine your current filtration system to make sure it’s the right size and strength for your individual environment.

A.F.U.E stands for annual fuel utilization efficiency and is applied to furnaces. It means how much fuel efficiency does that particular furnace use? A 96% A.F.U.E means the furnace is 96% efficient. Another way of looking at it is that for every dollar spent on heating, the system gets 96 cents worth of heating.

S.E.E.R  stands for Seasonal energy efficiency ratio and is the standard used to measure the efficiency of air conditioners. S.E.E.R rating is much more important in places that require the A.C to be on most of the year. In a climate such as Canada, the S.E.E.R rating isn’t as important, because we’re only using the ac sporadically, 3-4 months out of the year. The energy savings achieved through higher S.E.E.R ratings in those kind of climates are negligible.

This is how much cooling is required to determine the size of the A.C unit to cool your home. A ton generally represents 1000 sq ft of cooling area. Therefore, a 2000 sq ft home usually requires a 2 ton AC system.

The termination is where the venting terminates outside the house. That is the final area where the poison gases are vacated from the home. It’s important to ensure that the termination area follows the safety codes imposed by the government. For example, there are minimum distances required between termination and windows, doors, gas meters, etc. These are determined by the government to make sure that the carbon monoxide is vented properly and safely and to make sure none of it gets back into the home or the neighbour’s home. These codes are determined by the government and it is against the law to ignore them. The licensed gas fitters at The Comfort Xperts will make sure that everything to do with your hvac system and venting are up to code.
